Beltane B&B is a family home in Dulcote located on the outskirts of the City of Wells. The rooms are all cosy, self-contained suites and all the facilities that you would expect from a quality Bed and Breakfast. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a farmer market in the square which adds to the atmosphere of this charming city.
History to the present day
Previously known as The White House, the first record of this village ale house in Dulcote was in 1696, when John West an "inn-holder" of Wells leased the ale house beside the west mill. In such a tiny community as Dulcote, it is likely that Mr. West served his beer from a room in this house, and that this early-style pub would have been the social hub of the working community.
Both the lease of 1696 and the survey of Dulcote about 1785 lists the White Horse Inn and Garden as the property of the Vicars of Wells. A map dated 1829 plots the White Horse Inn, Court and Garden, in the very spot where the White House sits today, also identifies the land as "leasehold for lives" meaning land leased out to a tenant and his/her heirs over the course of several specified generations.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 9.00am Monday to Saturday and 8.00am to 9.30am Sundays and is made from locally sourced ingredients, wherever possible, including eggs which are laid by free range hens onsite. Alternatively a continental breakfast or any other special dietary needs or preferences will be catered for whenever possible. Prepared packed lunches are available for days out (by arrangement) and fresh flowers and/or Champagne in your room on arrival can be arranged. A list of local recommended restaurants is available or you can order a light evening meal on request.
Grounds and gardens
Every room has access to a seating area in the garden. There is also a large patio area, flower borders, a green house and vegetable garden. There is a summer house with books and magazines where guests can exchange books brought with them and leave with something new to read.
Free Wifi is provided in all rooms and light evening meals, snacks and packed lunches are available to purchase during your stay. Beltane is also an independent consultant for Neals Yard Organic products, so samples are often available to try during your stay.
