Introduction

Christ’s College is an oasis of calm in the very heart of the city. One moment you are in the quiet and tranquil gardens, then pass through the 500 year old Great Gate into the busy shopping centre. Christ’s College is the perfect location for visitors who are on a leisure break or are in Cambridge on business.

The accommodation available houses undergraduates during term time. The rooms are therefore not equipped to four star hotel standard but they are clean, comfortable and situated in a quiet location in the heart of the College. Offering, Standard (shared bathroom facilities) or Ensuite Single, Twin or Double rooms.

All rooms are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities as well as a welcome pack of toiletries. Towels are also provided. All rooms are serviced daily by a College ‘bedmaker’.

Please note we are not able to accept bookings for Stag and Hen parties

We do not accept bookings for anyone under 21 years of age and therefore our accommodation is not suitable for families or young children.

History to the present day

Christ's College was first established as God's-house in 1437 by William Byngham, a London parish priest, for training grammar school masters. Shortly after receiving its Royal Licence from Henry VI in 1446, God's-house was forced to move from its original site, as this was needed for the King's new project (what was to become Kings’s College). God's-house moved to its present site in 1448 where it was re-founded in 1505 as Christ’s College by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. Lady Margaret has been honoured ever since as the Foundress.

First Court dates from the 15th century and is the oldest part of the College. The Master’s Lodge, Chapel and Hall are all found in First Court as are Charles Darwin’s rooms. Charles Darwin studied here between 1828 and 1831.
Copies of the College history and postcards, as well as Darwin related products are available from the Porters’ Lodge.

Food and Drinks

Our rates include a Full English breakfast, served Monday to Friday in our Upper Hall between 8.00 to 9.00am and on a Saturday and Sunday morning between 8.30am to 9.30am.

The East Anglian Breakfast

The catering team at Christ’s College have been working hard to deliver breakfasts with the lowest carbon footprint possible and their new East Anglian breakfast is believed to have the lowest carbon footprint out of all of the Colleges.

All breakfast items on the new menu come from suppliers within a 50 mile radius of the College; free range eggs from Norfolk, mushrooms from Bungay in Suffolk, tomatoes from Ware in Hertfordshire, sausages from a free range pig farm in Lincolnshire, bacon is cured in the College kitchen using pork from Suffolk and potatoes grown on a farm in Ely.

The East Anglian Breakfast is the latest in a series of changes that the College has made to its catering operation. Over the last two years the College has successfully reduced packaging by bulk buying essentials and removing individual packets of cereal, jam and sauces from its dining halls. Guests now also have a fresh yoghurt bar where diners can make themselves a bespoke yoghurt with additional accompaniments, giving greater choice and reducing landfill at the same time!

Grounds and gardens

Christ’s College has extensive gardens laid out over four Courts. The Fellows’ Garden, which is open 5 days a week, has beautiful herbaceous borders and is home to the famous Milton’s Mulberry Tree. There is also the Darwin Garden, created as part of the celebration of the bi-centenary of his birth, and which features a sculpture of a young Charles Darwin and also the Darwin Walk.

Whilst guests are most welcome to walk through the grounds of the College at all times, we do respectfully request that you do not walk or sit on any of the lawn areas around the College grounds.

Other facilities

Should you need the use of an iron and ironing board during your stay, there is an ironing room in the P staircase laundry. There are also coin operated washing and drying machines available for use.

Internet access, including WIFI is available in all rooms. Rooms will also be provided with an ethernet cable, guests need to bring their own laptop. Details on how to connect to the internet can be obtained from the Porters' Lodge.

, April 2014: Excellent describes our stay. In the centre of Cambridge, historic buildings, great value. The porters were very helpful and friendly 5/5

, April 2014: Room was a bit too warm, even in April. Furniture and decor very basic (as in - student accommodation) but bed VERY comfortable and location perfect for our needs. Good to be able to tour the gardens, which were lovely. Fantastic breakfast - servers were great, as were the porters at the porters' lodge. 4/5

, April 2014: would stay again, very enjoyable, and would recommend to friends and family 5/5

, April 2014: The lunch was fairly average and not very good value for money. 4/5

, April 2014: not a hotel,but you couldn`t do better for the price 4/5

, April 2014: We loved staying in Christ's College, Cambridge. Superb location and atmosphere and we found all staff, especially the porters, to be really friendly and helpful. A lovely weekend and we will definitely be back and based on our wonderful experience, will use University Rooms in other cities too. 5/5

, April 2014: It was a great stay in Christ's College Cambridge. The room was really good and the breakfast offered a huge variety of cooked and fresh items. I really enjoyed my stay. The only thing that could be improved is to put a hairdryer into the room. But except for this minor detail the stay was really great and the room was spotless. 5/5

, March 2014: The ability to stay in a historic college and walk the gardens and dine in the halls was wonderful. Highly recommended. The rooms are clean and they provide soaps and soft towels. There was a bit of noise in the night from drunken party goers - but you could get that anywhere. Porters are lovely, very helpful. 4/5

, March 2014: Really great star - porters could not have been more helpful and beautiful view from room. All very comfortable. Thank you! 5/5

, March 2014: Lovely experience. We have stayed in most of the 'best' hotels in Cambridge and none are particlarly good. This is not a hotel, but clean and comfortable. The bathroom was huge, but institutional. Quiet. A great option for the graduation weekend. Thanks. 5/5

, March 2014: The staff were genuinely kind and happy to help. 5/5

, March 2014: Christ's College was an excellent place to stay during two days of training in Cambridge. Close to the Parkside coach stops and within a very easy 15 minute walk of the training venue, and right overlooking Christ's Pieces, the location was ideal for me and my guide dog. The Grafton Centre shopping area is just across Christ's Pieces. The porters were delightfully welcoming and helpful, taking time to show me the main route between the Lodge to my room twice so my guide dog could learn it well. I appreciated the level surface - especially as I returned in the dark both nights. Wifi was poor in my New Court room, but the simple plug-and-play ethernet connection was superfast and very much appreciated. I was very pleased to see the note asking guests to consider whether towels needed cleaning daily - I wish more hotels would do this. Overall a most relaxing place to stay and I will not hesitate to book again. 5/5

, March 2014: Really helpful staff - I arrived very late and was given a warm welcome. 4/5

, March 2014: Excellent central accomodation 5/5

, March 2014: We enjoyed our stay at Christ's College, especially the courtesy of the porters, the excellent breakfast and our walk around the Fellows' Garden. 4/5

, March 2014: a really enjoyable stay. very friendly porters. excellent breakfast, all locally sourced, which was particularly impressive. 5/5

, March 2014: Would definitely stay again. Would be even better if car parking included 5/5

, March 2014: Would have liked a full length mirror in the bedroom. A TV would have been good. The porters were brilliant and really helpful. This college is ideally placed right in the centre of Cambridge. Would definitely recommend. 5/5

, March 2014: I was attending a function at another College A great experience at Christ's from start to finish: - simple booking - easy, friendly check in at Porters Lodge - room in line with description - basic but all facilities there - College right in the centre of Cambridge - simple to get in and out of College, even late - excellent breakfast, with great choice of food Only (not very important) limitation was patchy wifi All in all, a great place to stay and a wonderful way for anyone to get a feel for the unique environment of a Cambridge University College 5/5

, December 2013: Magical experience, one that would be difficult to beat. Many thanks to the Porters who were most helpful and Jolly -- sorry for this 'pun' at Christmas! 5/5

Mr Andrew Hay, September 2013: Every member of staff: College Porters, cleaners and kitchen staff were all helpful, courteous, warm, welcoming and funny. And to spend time in the College grounds was a real privilege. There are things people might like to be done differently but we'd recommend going with the flow and enjoying Christ's College for the oasis of calm that it is (outside term time of course). 4/5

Dr Mike Kearsley, September 2013: A great experience. We will return without a doubt. 5/5

Miss Leda Sammarco, September 2013: I had a delightful stay at Christ's College, which is well situated in the centre of town. The room size was excellent with plenty of space. It would have been nice if the double bed had been slightly bigger, but this is a minor quibble. There was a good choice at breakfast and it was well-organised, so you never really had to queue for anything. Last, but most certainly not least, I would like to say how helpful and friendly I found the porters. Even though it's not their role, they very kindly carried my case up the flight of stairs to my room (as I'd hurt my back recently). I really appreciated this. Thank you, again. 5/5

Mr Christopher Nelson, September 2013: Marvelous location, great staff. 5/5

Dr Andrew Wells, September 2013: Spacious and comfortable room, with communal shared bathroom facilities for one corridor of rooms. 5/5

Mrs Deirdre Crossan, September 2013: My daughter and I had a lovely time staying in Christ College, we would definitely recommend it to friends and family. The room was spotless and the location was excellent. The breakfast selection was better than many hotels I have stayed in. The porters were helpful and friendly. Enjoyed meeting some of the past students who were there for 60th reunion. We will stay again when we are visiting Cambridge. 5/5

Mrs Jean Davis, September 2013: Most enjoyable stay. Friendly helpful staff. Good location beautiful gardens and buildings. 5/5

Mr Adrian Allan, September 2013: I really enjoyed the breakfasts, the bacon and other cooked food being very tasty. The porters could not have been more helpful. It was an especial pleasure also to visit the College Library exhibition on Past Masters of Christ's College, having met two previous Masters and co-edited the autobiography of a Christ's College graduate who refers to another former Master, Sir Arthur Shipley. Excellent value for money and most enjoyable. 5/5

Would not hesitate to come again and recommend to others. 5/5

Mrs Jane Godfrey, September 2013: The staff in the Porter's Lodge could not have been more helpful. The college grounds were beautiful and well maintained. A most enjoyable experience and very centrally located. 4/5

Mrs Fiona Willans, September 2013: Without a doubt we would stay again. The porters were extremely friendly and helpful as porters always seem to be!!! Mrs Elizabeth Blomfield, September 2013: A memorable and enjoyable experience. The only note is that the times for breakfast on Sunday were listed incorrectly in the welcome pack. The pack stated that breakfast was from 08:00 - 09:15. When we went down for breakfast at 08:15 the door was locked, and breakfast did not start until 08:30. Otherwise, everything was great - welcome pack in particular was very helpful. Many thanks. 4/5

We had a large twin with ensuite in the second court (E4) and were very satisfied. The porters were very friendly. Parking in Cambridge is a bit of a problem (expensive) - so my tip would be to park at the railways station and takke a taxi down into the centre of town, which worked out both convenient , secure and economical. 4/5

A walking tour of Cambridge is an absolute must. 5/5

Miss Yasmin Hampton, October 2012: Me and a friend's stay at the university was exceptional. The room and breakfast was to a very high standard. We will definately come and stay again, and have recommended the university to our friends. Thankyou very much Yasmin 5/5

I can imagine most hotels might not provide such a service free of charge. This made a positive difference to the remainder of my time in Cambridge. 4/5

Mrs Julie Deakin, July 2012: Differing parking advice, but we got there in the end. The porter we originally spoke to suggested Park and Ride, however it seems you can't leave your car overnight at the Park and Ride car park, so it defeats the object really.
