History to the present day
Vice Admiral 1st Baron Cuthbert Collingwood (26 September 1748 – 7 March 1810) originally owned the property and the valley in which it is situated. Collingwood planted acorns at every opportunity to boost future stocks of timber for British ships and there still remains a hillside of oaks near the house which sadly failed to grow because of the poor soil and were not needed when steel arrived. The house was built in 1919 as a plain rectangular house and then was added to in the 30’s by a famous architect called Mauchline who also designed the cottages nearby in an arts and crafts style.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is served between 7.30am and 9.30am, but can be flexible to fit in with guests wishes. Breakfasts can be traditional English, kippers or kedgeree and served along with fresh orange juice, home made bread, Hethpool speciality ‘Rodgrod ‘and of course porridge. A selection of teas and coffees are served. The B & B can produce dinner for you by prior arrangement using local produce and vegetables from a well-stocked garden. Special diets can be catered for.
Grounds and gardens
There is a large garden where guests are welcome to sit and can be provided with tea or drinks before dinner. There is also a gazebo overlooking the lake where on special occasions guests may have dinner. For the brave hearted there is a deep pool in the river nearby where you can swim or a waterfall where frequently sea trout can be seen jumping.
Other facilities
