Introduction
St John’s College celebrated its 500th Anniversary in 2011. The College was founded on the site of the 13th century Hospital of St John in Cambridge, expanding over the subsequent five hundred years to become the largest of the Oxford and Cambridge Colleges by area.
St John's has magnificent gardens and extends onto the famous Cambridge Backs beyond the River Cam, with its courts connected by the beautiful Bridge of Sighs. Although the Main Gate of the College leads right into the heart of the city, the College courts provide a serene and peaceful environment for our guests.
Our recently refurbished guest rooms, situated in North Court and Third Court, accommodate students during Term. Both twin and single rooms are available and all en suite, and all rooms are serviced daily. Please note there are no lifts. The twin rooms have seperate beds in different rooms within your own area. Each area has a small lounge
History to the present day
St John’s College was founded on the 9th April 1511, its charter sealed by the executors of the foundress, Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother of King Henry VII) who had begun the process of transforming the ancient hospital of St John the Evangelist, Cambridge, into a college for students in the liberal arts and theology.
College alumni have included the classicist Roger Ascham, the social reformer William Wilberforce, the poet William Wordsworth, the physicist Paul Dirac, and the athlete Christopher Brasher.

Grounds and gardens
In Tudor times the landscape of St John's was strikingly different from today. On part of the present site of New Court and the Cripps Building lay fish ponds which had once served the brethren of the Hospital of St John. To the south of these, where the sandy Broad Walk now crosses St John's Meadow, was the Close, surrounded by trees and ditches. Beyond the ditch at the western edge of the meadow stretched pasture and open arable fields.
By the seventeenth century, the gardens at St John's had expanded and taken on a more formal aspect, along with with the creation of a bowling-green in 1625; An avenue of tall limes, with one hundred metres of yew hedges on each side, lead down to the Queen's road gate of the College, beside the Fellows' Garden and the wildlife haven of the Fellows' Wilderness.

Miss Leda Sammarco, November 2012: I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at St John's College. As well as an ensuite bathroom, there was a kitchen too, which was great. The rooms were very comfortable and one was particularly spacious. I thought the breakfast was excellent with a good selection of food - I appreciated the Yeo Valley yoghurt! It was great to have table service too for tea and coffee as this avoided long queues and the dining area was very spacious. It was nice to be near the centre of Cambridge and it was very peaceful at night too. The porters were very helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay here again. 5/5
Dr Ed Koiddle, October 2012: very enjoyable place to stay 5/5

Mr Stuart Rowan, October 2012: We had a great time, thanks, and would recommend your B&B anytime. You have a beautiful college and grounds and it is somewhere we had wanted to visit for years. However, it would be a great help if you could state clearly, on all correspondence/websites that there is no parking! We were fortunate in that you came to our rescue, but it could have cost us a fortune if we had had to leave our car in the NCP car park overnight. 5/5
Mr Alastair Stone, October 2012: Having met at a college party in St John's College in 1963, this was a real 'pilgrimage' for my wife and me. Everything worked out just fine.

Dr Hemesiri Kotagama, July 2012: Loved the stay in a 450 year old room. The facilities the design and the atmospher at St Johns is the same at University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka. Thank you very much. 5/5

Mrs Ann Jones, July 2012: We cannot recommend St Johns College and the porters more highly. The location is brilliant. The porters: Tim, Colin, Paul, John and George were so kind and friendly and went the extra mile every time we have any query, including changing the lock on the Oak when we couldn't lock our door. We really felt like we couldn't have topped our Cambridge experience. Anyone staying in Cambridge would find St Johns unbeatable for location, service and style. Thank you all so very much. Ann (Welsh) and Belinda (Australian) 5/5
Mrs Janet Marner, July 2012: I'm glad you gave me this opportunity to respond as I was going to write a note anyway. Will certainly recommend B & B at St. John's - loved staying in the college and feeling all that history around us. Thoughtful touches like the teatray (especially!) and hairdryer and toiletries were above the service given by some ordinary B & B accommodation. We were comfortable and warm in a rather chilly early July. Breakfast had excellent choice available and friendly, efficient staff. Porter pleasant and helpful. Enjoyed Cambridge v. much - could have done with even more time, but staying in the college gave one a feeling of being part of it for a short while. Thanks. 5/5

The Buttery where breakfast was served was better than many 4 or 5 star hotels when it came to choice, quality, service and setting.
I would have no hesitation in booking St. Johns College in the future and will also be recommending friends to this hidden gem. 5/5
Miss Ruth Boxall, September 2011: Our first experience of college rooms. Our twin en suite was actually even better - a flatlet with our own door with 2 single study rooms, a shower room and little kitchen with fridge, sink and electric hobs. It was spotlessly clean and towels were changed each day.
We enjoyed walking across the Bridge of Sighs and onto the Backs in the evening.
The porters were helpful with information, polite and friendly and the breakfast staff very efficient.
The booking service was very simple and efficient. We would certainly book again. 5/5
