History to the present day
It was first built in 1461, on the junction of the old London/Exeter & Oxford/Southampton roads and has a rich history. The sign is a badge of the house of Lancaster and recalls the series of famous battles between 1455 and 1471 which history labels the War of the Roses.
The White Hart also has connections with the church as church parson and keen angler Charles Kingsley, who wrote The Waterbabies in 1863, visited often when he was fishing in the River Fleet. He is recorded as saying of The White Hart: "I like this place and that is the truth."
For those who venture upstairs, there is an elaborate bedstead in one of the hotel's fifteen bedrooms which is said to have belonged to former British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli.
In Whitchurch there is the only working Silk Mill in Europe.
